There’s a moment on holiday that parents know all too well: when the children run off to the beach and you sit down, breathe in and think, “This is it, this is the right place”.
In Castagneto Carducci, that moment comes quickly. Crystal-clear sea, medieval villages, amusement parks and nature that still knows how to surprise: everything you need for a family holiday that will stick in your memories.
Let us tell you about this corner of Tuscany. If you’re looking for somewhere to spend your holidays, you’ve come to the right place: let us tell you about the area we love, day by day.
Castagneto Carducci is one of those places that manages to please everyone: parents are looking for relaxation, beautiful scenery and good food; children want the sea and fun; and everyone wants something to remember. Here, they find all of this, right at their fingertips.
The beaches of Castagneto Carducci: a family favourite
When we talk about the sea in Castagneto Carducci, we’re talking about one of the most beautiful coastlines in Tuscany. The beaches are long and sandy, with waters that slope gently — perfect for young children who love swimming without too much current.
Marina di Castagneto: crystal-clear waters and shallow seabed
The beach at Marina di Castagneto Carducci is one of the most popular with families, and for good reason. The shallow waters allow little ones to play in the water in complete safety, whilst parents can relax without having to keep their eyes fixed on the shore every second. The sand is fine and light in colour, and the pine forest provides natural shade behind the beach.
At the Canado Family Hotel, there’s no need to plan a trip to the beach: our hotel is nestled in a centuries-old pine forest right by the sea. Forget the car or bike: our private, fully equipped beach is just a few metres from the accommodation, a short stroll under the shade of the pine trees. Comfort is guaranteed, as the restaurants and pool area are situated in an even more central location, just a few metres from both the accommodation and the beach.
Exploring the coastline: between beaches and unspoilt nature
If you fancy a change of scenery for the day, the area offers wonderful alternatives just a short distance away. You can discover the wide sandy stretches of the nearby Donoratico beach or head a little further south towards San Vincenzo, where the coastline continues to offer crystal-clear waters and excellent facilities for families.
The fully equipped beaches of the Etruscan Coast offer every amenity for families, whilst if you’re seeking a more authentic connection with nature, the unspoilt beach in the Sterpaia pine forest is one of the most beautiful in Tuscany: a protected environment where you can enjoy the sea away from the crowds.
Our advice? Enjoy the comfort of our beach for daily relaxation and spend a day exploring the neighbouring nature reserves for a discovery experience with the children.
Beyond the sea: the magic and history of Castagneto Carducci

After soaking up the blue of the sea, it’s only right to spend some time exploring the village that gives this area its name. Castagneto Carducci enjoys a truly privileged location: the municipality stretches from the Metalliferous Hills to the Tyrrhenian coast, offering a dual and extraordinary landscape. On one side, the green of the vineyards and olive groves; on the other, the blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It is the heart of the Etruscan Coast, one of the most authentic stretches of Tuscany, where wild nature and the safe sea coexist without overdevelopment, thanks also to the nearby Sterpaia Protected Area, which guarantees clean waters and unspoilt seabeds.
A little journey through time for children
The name of the village is no coincidence: Castagneto was the adopted home of Giosuè Carducci, the great poet who spent part of his childhood here and to whom he dedicated unforgettable verses.
The medieval village still preserves its walls, tower and ancient silhouette, which stands out against the hills. Less than ten minutes from the coast, you can wander up through the narrow streets where the air is scented with lavender and freshly baked bread. Strolling with the children along the cobbled streets and telling them the poet’s story is a wonderful way to turn a day out into a little journey through time.
Here, you won’t have to choose between the beach and culture: Canado’s convenient location allows you to enjoy both, even in the same afternoon.
The coast is part of the Sterpaia Protected Natural Area, which means crystal-clear sea and a pine forest that almost reaches the water’s edge. For families with children, this is a huge advantage: unspoilt nature and a safe sea, free from overdevelopment.
If, at this point, you’re wondering when the best time is for a holiday in Castagneto Carducci, here’s our answer. June and September are the real ‘golden periods’ for families: just after the end of the school year or before the autumn term starts, you can enjoy a lovely mild climate, less crowded beaches and more affordable rates. July is the heart of summer, ideal for those seeking liveliness and major events, whilst for August we recommend booking well in advance to secure your front-row spot on our private beach during the peak of the Tuscan season.

Things to do in Castagneto Carducci: activities for the whole family
This is where Castagneto Carducci really comes into its own. There’s plenty to do, for all ages and every type of holidaymaker. Here are the things our guests love most.
Amusement parks near Castagneto
For children (but let’s be honest: for parents too), the amusement parks in the area are a must-visit. Il Cavallino Matto in Marina di Castagneto is one of Tuscany’s most popular theme parks, as well as the largest in the region: rides, attractions, shows and a magical atmosphere that captivates children aged 2 to 12. It’s literally just a few minutes from our property.
Acqua Village, on the other hand, is a water park ideal for the hottest days: slides, pools, relaxation areas for parents and pure adrenaline for older children. A day there and the children will sleep like angels. The nearest one is in Cecina, about a 15-minute drive from Canado. Heading south, about a 25- to 30-minute drive away, is the Acqua Village in Follonica.
Excursions in the Sterpaia Nature Reserve
The Sterpaia Nature Park is one of the most beautiful nature reserves on the Tuscan coast. It stretches across pine forests, Mediterranean scrub and sandy dunes, with walking and cycling trails suitable for the whole family. Walking amongst the fragrant pines, watching the birds and reaching the sea via the park’s paths is an experience children will remember for a long time.
There are also riding schools in the area offering guided horse rides: a wonderful activity to enjoy together, even for children on their first ride.
The San Silvestro Mining Park: an adventure through history
In Campiglia Marittima, about twenty minutes from Castagneto, lies one of the hidden treasures of the Etruscan Coast: the San Silvestro Mining Park. It is an archaeological and mining site where you can explore ancient medieval mines, underground tunnels and a lunar landscape that immediately captivates the most curious visitors.
For children, it’s an incredible experience: putting on a helmet, entering the lit tunnels and discovering what life was like for miners is something completely different from the usual cultural outing. We recommend it for children aged 6–7 and more.
Places to visit nearby
Castagneto Carducci is also a perfect starting point for exploring one of Italy’s most interesting regions. Here are the destinations we always suggest to our guests.
Marina di Castagneto Carducci
Just a few minutes from the village, the marina is the ideal destination for those seeking the relaxation of the seaside without sacrificing comfort. Characterised by a dense, cool pine forest that stretches almost to the sand, it offers wide golden beaches with beach establishments and stretches of free coastline. It is the perfect place for families, thanks to the shallow waters.
San Vincenzo
Just ten minutes away from us, San Vincenzo is the quintessential seaside town of the Etruscan Coast. The seafront is lively and full of bars and restaurants, the beaches are wide and well-equipped, and the town centre offers shops, ice-cream parlours and everything you need for a family evening out. It’s also perfect for an evening stroll after dinner.
Bolgheri
Bolgheri is one of those places that takes your breath away. The famous avenue of cypress trees leading to the village — celebrated by Carducci himself — is a sight that alone is worth the trip. The medieval village is small and cosy, with artisan shops and excellent restaurants. Children love getting lost in the narrow streets and climbing the walls. Although the area is famous for its great red wines, a visit to the village is absolutely family-friendly.
Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti
A little further south, Populonia is one of the best-preserved Etruscan villages in Italy. The acropolis overlooking the Gulf of Baratti, with its Etruscan tombs accessible directly from the beach, is an extraordinary blend of history and sea. The Gulf of Baratti also offers one of the most beautiful and sheltered beaches in the area — ideal for families with young children.
Suvereto: the medieval village inland
For those who love the inland, Suvereto is a medieval gem just a few kilometres from the coast. Walls, towers, a Romanesque church and a quiet square where time seems to have stood still. A perfect half-day trip to take a break from the sea and discover the most authentic Tuscany.
