How the Canado Family Hotel came to be
Would you like to discover the history of our resort, just a stone’s throw from the Tuscan coast?
The Canado was born in a place with deep-rooted history: here, in 1946, Count Gaddo della Gherardesca founded the Donoratico Shipyard (Cantiere Navale Donoratico).
From shipyard to international excellence
In the post-war period, the shipyard became a benchmark in the construction of high-quality boats. Crafted from Honduran cedar by the finest shipwrights, Donoratico’s boats stood out for their elegance, lightness and performance. From the 1950s onwards, they triumphed in competitions around the world, culminating in Olympic gold in 1968 in Mexico City, in the Italian ‘Two with’.
Innovation and vision
1952 also saw the birth of one of the first sailing catamarans, destined to revolutionise the sector. Donoratico’s boats reached 56 countries and were chosen by international figures and institutions, including the Naval Academy of Livorno. Among the stars of this season was also Ambrogio Fogar, with his famous ‘Sprint of Surprise’.
The end of the shipyard, the beginning of a new story
In the late 1970s, with the advent of new technologies, the shipyard was forced to close permanently in 1979. However, the innovative spirit remains: among the early experiments was the use of carbon fibre, which attracted the interest of engineers in the automotive sector.
The birth of Canado
On that site, nestled within 25 hectares of pine forest and Mediterranean vegetation, the Canado Family Hotel was born. Today, the resort stretches between nature and the sea, with a central building — ‘La Vela’ — and several structures set amidst the greenery, totalling 176 accommodation units.
Where does the name Canado come from? It is a tribute to this history: it is in fact derived from the initials of CAntiere NAvale DOnoratico.
